The news broke today of the sad death of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld
Lagerfeld was born in Germany and rose in prominence to become Chanel's iconic designer, steering the giant Chanel ship for over 30 years. His career trajectory took off after he won first prize for a sketch of a coat, which was subsequently made by Pierre Balmain. After stints with Jean Patou and Chloe he began a collaboration with the Italian fashion house, Fendi.
In 1983 Lagerfeld took the helm at Chanel, readily admitting that what he designed Coco Chanel would have hated, but his tenure was a huge financial success. He also began his own eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld.
Every catwalk show for Chanel featured a haute couture wedding dress and several notable famous brides have worn his creations for their own weddings, Poppy Delvigne, Kiera Knightly and Lily Allen. Knightly's simple gown featured a knee length powder pink tulle skirt with a bandeau top and she liked it so much she has worn it several times, including on the red carpet.
In 2004 he broke the mould by becoming the first fashion designer to collaborate with a high street store, H&M. He also designed three bottles for Diet Coke, his favourite drink. Like him or loathe him (he was known for his controversial comments) Lagerfeld will be sorely missed by the fashion world.
